Applying European Accessibility Act in practice

Since June 28, 2025, a new European directive regarding digital accessibility has been in effect: the European Accessibility Act (EAA). This directive requires organizations to ensure that their digital products (such as websites, web shops and apps) meet European (digital) accessibility requirements. This means that if you run a webshop, for example, it must also be able to be used by people with visual or motor disabilities, for example. The EAA has a big impact on the work of, for example, front-end developers, UX designers, product owners and content creators. In cooperation with Thuiswinkel.org, we therefore developed four e-learnings on digital accessibility for the interest group’s E-Academy. With these e-learnings, the target group is aware of the content of the EAA and can ensure that their digital products comply with the new EU directive.

Targeted e-learnings with video

During the audience research, we noticed that the new regulations on digital accessibility could feel oppressive to some. It was therefore important to frame the e-learnings in a positive light. Of course the new directive poses challenges, but digital accessibility brings a lot of good above all! On the one hand, because more people can use the digital product properly. But also because it actually improves the product. Digitally accessible websites, for example, require less maintenance and are easier to find in search engines. For web shops, good digital accessibility creates room for growth and extra turnover. An opportunity that a webshop cannot afford to miss!

In the e-learnings, experts use videos to show how digitally accessible building and design works in practice. Each job profile (front-end developers, UX designers, product owners and content creators) has a separate e-learning, provided with a central practical case. This makes the course material concretely applicable within the participant’s specific field of work.

The e-learnings have been developed in close cooperation with Thuiswinkel.org and the experts of MKB Toegankelijk. This program of MKB-Nederland and VNO-NCW activates branch organizations and entrepreneurs to work on accessibility, so that everyone can participate fully in society. The e-learnings can be accessed through the e-Academy of Thuiswinkel.org.
